The Realm of Blade: Why Nintendo Will Always Rule.

Mar 19 '12

The Realm of Blade and how Nintendo won a fan for life.

When I was 12 years old, my life completely revolved around video games. It was 1991, so there was no such thing as Playstation or Xbox. There were a few consoles on the market, but the primary console war was between Nintendo and Sega. Sega usually won out on the graphics department, but Nintendo (in my opinion) usually won out on the character and gameplay department. But that isn’t really what this Tumblr is about. This Tumblr is being made to show the world how one company helped pave the way for my career and how their exceptional customer service cemented me as a lifelong fan.

This will be a short Tumblr. It will show you a video game concept that my friend and I conceptualized at a very young age and mailed (original art, not photocopies) to Nintendo. Make no mistake, the artwork and story is basically miserable. In fact, most of it is plagiarized from Nintendo’s own magazine, Nintendo Power. But the art itself is not what this is about either. It’s simply being shown to illustrate how one company did everything right to make this young artist never stop trying.

For about 2 months we worked on this game idea. It usually involved my friend and I talking about the latest issue of Nintendo Power, playing some Star Tropics , F Zero or any number of Mega Man games and then me opening up said issue of Nintendo power and looking for cool art to inspire me. …or in most cases for me to steal from.

We were really in love with RPGs at the time. So we knew that needed a bunch of characters to come across in your travels. I basically hated drawing every single one of these characters because I wanted to get to the cool monsters and characters. This hasn’t changed to this very day.

Oops! When I was uploading all of the files, I forgot the spells! So here they are in all their glory. My favorite was always “Bubble”. Kinda morbid….

My friend came up with all of the weapons and magic spells, so I can’t take credit there. But I remember us saying “Oh man! WHEN YOU GET THE FLIGHT SWORD IT HAS TO BE THE BEST SWORD EVER. The whole screen must stop as you find it!”.We knew the importance of dramatic pause.

Here’s the main character of the game. Everything I drew had a jetpack back then.

I think “woody” was 100% ripped from Actraiser….except of course the cute little tree bombs and fangs of course. Add fangs to everything!

The most interesting part about our “concept” was that we thought we had this amazing universe that we had created, but we didn’t really care about backstory at all. We wrote the whole thing like it was a strategy guide because that’s all we knew back then.

Every “level” that we envisioned was comparable to the way that Megaman did their levels. Had to have a “air level” and a “sea level”, etc.
